Natural products determine the biological communication of microorganisms with each other as well as with plant and animal cells. They are involved in the development of many infectious diseases and are among the most important sources of drugs, especially antibiotics. At Leibniz-HKI, natural product research and infection biology are therefore closely linked. In our research we identify diagnostically or therapeutically applicable active substances, define how microorganisms produce these substances, and investigate how the human immune system fights infections.
