The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) was founded in 1817 and is one of the most important research institutions in the field of biodiversity. At its eleven locations throughout Germany, scientists from almost 40 nations conduct cutting-edge research on an international scale. The Society's headquarter is in the Main metropolis of Frankfurt in the heart of Germany. This is also where one of the best-known Senckenberg facilities, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, is located.

For the research project RUBBLE (Rocky seafloor — Underestimated driver for Benthic Biodiversity Living in the abyss and its Evolution), including a 6-weeks deep-sea expedition with RV METEOR we are looking for a

Seafloor imaging and habitat mapping specialist (m/f/d)

(part time 75%)

in the Marine Zoology Division at our location in Frankfurt, starting on 1^st of October 2024. The person we are looking for has a background either in marine biology or marine geology with special focus on seafloor (habitat) mapping and image analysis.

Tasks

• Participation in an approx. 6-weeks deep-sea expedition with RV METEOR in late 2024
• Operation of a brand-new high-end camera system for deep-sea missions
• Operational planning, hardware operation, data management and scientific interpretation of imagery.
• Processing of video and photo imagery for research purposes and public outreach
• Image data analyses and 3D-reconstruction of seafloor features and habitats (own geological interpretation and/or with collaborator); stereo-image correlation and quantitative optical analysis of seafloor features
• Data curation and visualization, writing and contributing to scientific publications

Your profile and experience:

• A university degree, preferably with a Master's or equivalent, in marine biology, marine geology, or related fields
• Proficiency in data management to effectively handle complex datasets, competence in digital image processing techniques
• Knowledge of photogrammetry and data visualization tools, facilitating in-depth analysis and communication of findings
• Rapid uptake of new (IT) methods and proficiency in image processing, analysis and relevant software
• Fluent proficiency in both German and English, encompassing speaking and writing competencies
• Strong communication skills
• Excellent self-management skills and flexibility to accommodate evolving project requirements
