Scientific employee, research assistant or doctoral candidate (m, f, d)

Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), Leipzig

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol, cloud and radiation research.

As part of the newly established DFG research Unit ‘Cloud 3d Structure And Radi-ation’ C3SAR, we are looking for a person with a strong interest in the study of cloud radiative processes taking into account spatially inhomogeneous atmospheric structures. The position can be awarded either as a half-time position over four years, as a 75% position (possibly in the context of a doctorate) over three years (both starting 1. 9. 2024) or as a full-time position over 2 years (starting 1. 6. 2026).

The DFG Research Unit C3SAR is coordinated by the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research in Leipzig with partners at the Universities of Munich, Cologne and Hanover as well as the German Weather Service in Offenbach and Lindenberg. The partners combine leading expertise in modelling and observing clouds and their radiative properties with the aim of taking the complex spatial structure of clouds into account in climate models and global remote sensing. The position thus offers highly relevant and interesting opportunities for work and co-operation in one of the most important areas of climate research. The responsibilities will be supported by the spokesperson and the project leaders of the research group and include

  • Acquisition and review of simultaneous measurements of cloud cover and solar and terrestrial radiative fluxes on the ground from previous measurement campaigns and from satellite observations with a focus on the HD(CP)2 Observational Prototype Experiment (HOPE)
  • Construction of spatial cloud fields from the synergy of observations and results of high-resolution cloud modelling
  • Comparison of modelled and observed radiative fluxes (radiative closure) for different cloud regimes
  • Preparation and realisation of the C3SAR measurement campaign in summer 2027 together with the project partners
  • Comparison of cloud-radiation relations from the work of the project partners

Necessary and desirable qualifications:

  • Degree in meteorology, physics (doctorate if applicable) and practical experience in the field of atmospheric research
  • Experience in the field of remote sensing of the cloudy atmosphere and/or ground-based radiation measurements
  • Ability to work in a team
  • High resilience and motivation

The position is limited to four years and includes a part-time position with 20 hours/week and can be divided into different durations and part-times as described above. The salary will be TV-L pay group 13, including the attractive social benefits of the public sector.

We offer you an exciting job with varied activities in an interdisciplinary working environment and a wide range of work-life balance options as well as flexible working hours and childcare facilities.

TROPOS values the diversity of its employees and pursues the goals of equal opportunities. The institute aims to increase the proportion of women in research and therefore encourages qualified women to apply. People with severe disabilities have priority in recruitment if they have the same aptitude, skills and professional qualifications.
