The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN) is an excellent and integrated research museum of the Leibniz Association with an international reputation and globally networked research infrastructure. It is active in three closely interlinked fields: collection-based research, collection development and cataloguing, and research-based public and educational work. Over the next ten years, the Museum für Naturkunde will realise its plan for the future. New laboratories and jobs for cutting-edge research will be created. At the same time, one of the world's most comprehensive natural history collections with over 30 million objects will be housed in modern collection buildings and completely digitized in the process. The implementation of the Future Plan, funded with a total of 660 million euros from the Federal Government and the State of Berlin, will only succeed with strong interdisciplinary national and international partners.

Project Description:

The BMBF is funding a new project to promote skills, leadership and innovation in engagement practice. The German-South African Public Engagement Exchange (PEX) will strengthen interactions within research and public engagement (PE) in and between South Africa and Germany. In this way, the potential for and the social applicability of bilateral research partnerships and their results will be supported in a targeted manner.

The project will develop skills and leadership through an international fellowship programme, in conjunction with

• a novel approach to international online learning that incorporates theory and practice.
• a programme of seminars and trainings co-designed by the cohort of Fellows to develop a PE community of Fellows and PE professionals in Germany and South Africa.
• an annual on-site conference curated by the current cohort of Fellows to address issues of national and international PE strategy, innovation and policy.
• innovation in PE through the exploration and development of new methodologies for international co-operation.
• a research component to complement all of the above activities. This will focus on questions of effectiveness, personal development and the reflected benefits of international networking through leadership and innovation in public engagement.

Responsibilities:

Management of, and outcomes research on, training, innovation and leadership track activity in a novel international programme between Germany and South Africa developing personal leadership skills in Public Engagement.

Broad responsibilities include,

• Building strategic partnerships and networks locally, nationally and internationally with a focus on research and innovation for leadership in engaged research.
• Lead on impact strategy for the project, and produce evidence and materials for evidence-led decision making for researchers and policy makers in the German and South African Governments.
• Design, deliver and evaluate a pro-active, sustainable networking concept for current and former participants.
• Manage an outcome focussed, competitive seed-funding programme for international public engagement activity proposals, based on the outcomes of the innovation track.
• Support and mentor leadership programme participants
• project, research, and impact management of the international project.

Broad responsibilities include,

• Undertake all project management activity including monitoring and delivering on project milestones, reporting, and budget.
• Develop and deliver on a research publication plan for diverse audiences, including peer-reviewed international research publications, Governmental policy makers, senior research leaders, and public engagement practitioners.
• Support the project lead and project partners in the management of legal, financial, and communication matters.

Requirements:

• University degree in natural or social sciences, science communication or other relevant subjects, a PhD is an advantage.
• Proven experience in building relationships and undertaking project work with international partners and stakeholders from the public, industrial, political and academic sectors
• Proven experience in establishing and managing national or international projects and (international) teams.
• Proven experience of setting up and managing networks of interest groups or communities of interest.
• Proven experience in several of the following areas: Project management, public engagement, international engagement policy, research impact, international research policy, knowledge transfer, training development, data management, evaluation
• Very good knowledge and proven experience in communicating with various stakeholders (e.g. NGOs, companies, policy makers) and channels (e.g. social media, print), both written and spoken, and in building professional contacts and networks.
• Very good knowledge in co-designing, developing and applying evaluation processes of different types (public engagement, research or institutional processes) for project development and reporting
• Very good knowledge and proven experience in strategic communication with various stakeholders and channels, both orally and in written form (e.g. in project reports, evaluations, policy recommendations, conference papers).
• Experience in the conception, implementation, quality control, scaling and sustainability of digital and physical events, training formats, workshops or training courses.
• Excellent and proven ability to work independently and in a structured manner
• Experience in raising and managing project funds including reporting and financial management
• Knowledge of purchasing processes and procurement procedures is an advantage
• Experience in working with communication, collaboration and project management platforms (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Miro, Asana)
• Experience in collating and analysing stakeholder input for strategic recommendations.
• Excellent written and spoken English and German.
