Research Associate / Software Developer in the field of research (m/f/d)

to join the Visual Analytics Research Group as of the next possible date.

The position is initially limited to 3 years. The position is available either full-time (39.80 working hours) or part-time at 75% (29.85 working hours). The exact working hours will be agreed individually as part of the selection process. The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

Your challenge

Your main task will be researching and developing innovative solutions for multimodal and visual search in sports videos as part of the research project "SportVid: A Portal to Support the Search, Analysis, and Evaluation of Videos in Sports and Exercise Science" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project will be conducted in cooperation with the German Sporty University Cologne (DSHS) and the Central Library for Sports Sciences (ZBS). Additionally, you will contribute to other projects within the research group.

Your tasks will focus on

  • Development of software components for classification and search in sports videos
  • Literature review on the current state of research in relevant computer science fields
  • Design and implementation of new solutions based on deep learning architectures
  • Software implementation of current AI methods for video analysis (e. g., cut detection, camera settings and movements, sports classification)
  • Implementation of algorithms for the analysis of sports videos (e. g., pose recognition, detection of sport-specific actions, field registration)
  • Systematic evaluation and comparison of the developed methods with approaches from the literature
  • Integration of the developed software components into the web-based video analysis platform SportVid 
  • Development of infrastructure and backend with modern web frameworks
  • Development of suitable application programming interfaces (APIs) for the implemented search functionalities
  • Implementation of functions for fine-tuning deep learning models within SportVid
  • Design, implementation, and testing of software components 
  • Support for the tasks of project partners (data collection, frontend development, etc.)
  • Contribution to scientific publications
  • Participation in other projects of the working group
  • Optional: If interested, we offer the possibility of a PhD

Your profile

  • A completed university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field of study such as computer science, mathematics, information science, or a comparable program in a related discipline
  • Very good English skills, both spoken and written
  • Excellent knowledge of one or more modern programming languages (especially Python, JavaScript), modern web technologies, and databases

Desirable additions to your profile

  • Familiarity with machine learning methods (especially deep learning) in the areas of computer vision, natural language processing, and information retrieval
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow)
  • Experience in the development of web applications
