The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde, IfL) in Leipzig, Germany, offers the following position for a maximum of four years, starting as soon as possible:

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

"Visual Regional Geographies" (100 % E 13 TV-L) (f/m/d)

The position, in accordance with § 2 Abs. 1 Satz 1 WissZeitVG (German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act), is limited to a maximum of 4 years. The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) analyses social processes from geographical perspectives and consults on sustainable and regional developments. It is the only non-university research institution for geography in Germany. As a member of the Leibniz Association, the IfL is jointly funded by the Federal Government and the Federal States. The IfL supports the development of its postdocs as they strengthen their research profiles and develop competencies aligned with their professional goals in research or research-adjacent areas.

"Visual Regional Geographies," a permanent institute-wide initiative, concerns how geographic knowledge and worldviews are shaped by visual representations and mediations (especially in combinations of texts, images, and maps and their analog or digital interfaces). It also concerns associated practices such as the development of digital methods for research and analysis. A core focus of the initiative is the ongoing digitization and indexing of the extensive visual collections of the IfL’s Archive for Geography and Central Geography Library to make them accessible and usable for digital research and transfer. In addition to the papers of key geographers, the institute’s collections include maps, travelogues, expedition reports, paintings and photographs from the late 19th century to the present day.
