The Energy, Transport and Environment Department comprises three research areas and examines energy, transport, and environmental policy strategies for sustainable development. In order to investigate options for a climate-friendly, competitive and secure energy supply and mobility, the department develops and uses quantitative economic optimization and equilibrium models, which are made available open source, as well as econometric methods. Within the department, the research area “Transformation of the Energy Economy” focuses on the transition to fully renewable energy systems, considering various options of sector coupling, energy storage, and other sources of flexibility. Its main tool is the open-source power sector model DIETER.

Starting preferably on 1 January 2025, the abovementioned research area at DIW Berlin is looking for a

Postdoc (f/m/d)

(Full-time with 39 hours per week)

This position is suitable for scientific qualification according to § 2 (1) WissZeitVG.

Your responsibilities:

  • Conception, implementation, and evaluation of quantitative electricity sector analyses
  • Analysis and visualization of data on variable renewables, extreme events, and flexibility options
  • Publication of scientific articles in leading international journals
  • Presentation of scientific papers at conferences and workshops
  • Further knowledge transfer through policy-relevant publication formats, press, media etc.
  • Collaboration with cooperation partners and supervision of students and doctoral candidates

Your qualifications:

  • Completed PhD in economics or related fields (or close to completion)
  • Proven experience in working on scientific research projects
  • Extensive knowledge of numerical energy market modeling
  • Extensive knowledge of the electricity sector and the role of storage and other flexibility options
  • Experience in the analysis of data on fluctuating renewable energies, ideally including extreme events
  • Extensive programming skills in Python, ideally also GAMS
  • Proven experience in the preparation and publication of scientific articles
  • Proven experience publishing in scientific journals
  • Very good English language skills

The position is limited to 6 years. Payment is based on salary group 14 TVöD Bund.
