PhD student / scientific co-worker (m/f/d)

Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification (IOM), Leipzig

The Leibniz-Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM) in Leipzig invites applications for the following position:

PhD student / scientific co-worker (m/f/d) / for 3 years limited

Project description:

This position, starting as soon as possible, is offered within the DFG-funded project "Coordination clusters with octahedral geometry as a basis for highly ordered mixed-metal oxide layers with pronounced memristive properties”. The position is limited to 36 months. In this mutual project, the synthesis and structural/spectroscopic characterization of organically and heterometal-functionalized zirconium- and cerium-based oxo-clusters is to be investigated. Here, the goal is to convert these pre-developed and pre-characterized clusters by thermal and/or photochemical conversion into electrically switchable complex oxide thin films with controlled stoichiometry and structure, as well as to characterize the relevant properties of these thin films.

We Offer:

  • Exciting workplace in an interdisciplinary work environment
  • Payment according to TV-L
  • Participation at benefit plans, including health and retirement plans (VBL)
  • Flexible working hours (26,7 h/week)
  • A family-friendly environment, certified under the „Work & Family Initiative“
  • Support in finding a place at a kindergarten, free parking spaces, capital-forming benefits

Your Tasks:

  • Synthesis of inorganic thin films by conversion of reaction mixtures
  • Characterization of such thin films (regarding structure, composition, thickness, density)
  • Cooperation with the colleagues of the chemistry-oriented team of this mutual project
  • Presentation of obtained results at national and international conferences, co-authoring peer-reviewed scientific publications

Your Profile:

  • Scientific university degree in physics or chemistry with a focus on thin films
  • Practical experience with sample synthesis, sample modification and sample handling
  • Knowledge and preferably practical experience with at least two of the following analysis methods: x-ray diffraction, x-ray reflectivity, secondary ion mass spectrometry, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
  • Experiences with vacuum technology and in operating vacuum systems are desirable
  • Goal-oriented working style and pragmatic attitude as well as a high level of teamwork
  • Practical experience in using standard software like MS-Office and scientific software like ORIGIN
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English for scientific communication
