Graduate School „Infection“ of the Leibniz Center Infection

The project will explore new alternative methods to animal experiments to identify common innate immune pathways involved in viral and parasitic infections. It is a joint project between the BNITM and Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV), with supervision by Prof. Iris Bruchhaus and Prof. Hanna Lotter, group leaders at the BNITM, and Prof. Gülsah Gabriel, a group leader at LIV.

The PhD student will work on an exciting novel research area: Using multi-organ systems, the immune-interaction of target infection sites for different pathogens and the consequences for distal organs not directly affected by the pathogens will be investigated.

The PhD is embedded within the framework of the Leibniz Center Infection (LCI) Graduate School. The LCI is a strategic alliance of the three North German Leibniz Institutes: the BNITM, the Research Center Borstel (FZB) and the Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV). The LCI focuses on global infections and aims to connect the complementary research of the three Leibniz institutes: tropical and emerging infections at BNITM, bacterial infections of the lung at the FZB and viral diseases at the LIV.

Your Profile: 

• Diploma/master degree or equivalent in life sciences
• Background in immunology
• Interest in infection biology and parasitology
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills
• Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
• Ability to work independently and to develop creative work

Starting date is flexible in fall 2024. The position is initially limited to 3 years and according to the rules of the public service under the TV-AVH (collective agreement of the “Arbeitsrechtliche Vereinigung Hamburg“).
