PA 2 - Manager (gn)

Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), Bremen

The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research GmbH (www.leibniz-zmt.de) is an independent research and teaching institute that provides scientific knowledge for the protection and sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems. To this end, we work in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner with our partners in the tropics. The ZMT is a member of the Leibniz Association.

The implementation of the UN SDGs under the pressure of global change is one of the greatest challenges for humanity. The time window to implement the SDGs and achieve the Paris climate goals is rapidly closing. This calls for fast decisive responses, increasing the risk of maladaptation measures that could widen the adaptive capacity gap between the global North and South. The Research Programme Global Change Impacts and Adaptation(PA2) aims to counteract these trends by providing a scientific basis for the development of effective climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in the tropics. Key PA2 themes are (1) the degradation caused by global change and the adaptation of tropical coastal and marine ecosystems, (2) the four main effects of rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations: ocean warming, ocean acidification, deoxygenation and sea level rise, (3) changes in biogeochemical cycles, (4) the erosion of ecosystems’ contributions to people and nature, (5) adaptive responses of human societies, and (6) the feedback of ecosystem and human change on climate and resource availability. Ultimately, PA2 aims to improve capabilities to predict regional climate change impacts in order to i) reduce the uncertainties regarding the future development of tropical marine ecosystems and their contributions to people and nature preservation, ii) overcome societal barriers hindering effective adaptation and mitigation measures, and iii) avoid maladaptation pathways.

At the earliest possible date (subject to release of funds), we are looking for a committed
