Junior Group Research Leader (m/f/d) "Ab initio Adaptive Multiscale Modelling of Crystal Growth"

Leibniz Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ), Berlin

The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the area of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for urgent societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health etc.) by modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the full spectrum from basic over applied research up to pre-industrial development and is performed in collaboration with national and international partners from university, academy and industry. The institute is part of Forschungsverbund Berlin (https://www.fv-berlin.de/) and belongs to the Leibniz Association www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de. You can find more details on the institute webpage: www.ikz-berlin.de

We are offering a position as a

Junior Group Research Leader (m/f/d)

Ab initio Adaptive Multiscale Modelling of Crystal Growth”

IKZ is internationally recognized for pioneering the growth of novel functional materials, employing a wide range of crystal growth techniques from melt growth to vapor phase methods such as metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, molecular beam epitaxy, and pulsed laser deposition. Our research delves into the fundamental mechanisms of crystal growth, basic materials properties, the physics and applications of functional hetero- and nanostructures, and superlattices, with a strong focus on their electronic and optical functionalities for optoelectronics, power electronics and quantum technology applications. Current modeling efforts include computational fluid dynamics and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations.

We seek to expand our modeling capabilities by incorporating modern ab-initio based methods to complement our experimental work. To this end, we are establishing a junior research group dedicated to first-principles-based adaptive multiscale modeling of semiconductor thin film growth. This group will integrate atomistic models with macroscopic transport models to develop comprehensive multiscale models of epitaxial growth. The focus will be on the thin film growth of crystalline materials, closely aligned with IKZ's and our partners' cutting-edge research on oxides, III-Nitrides, and SiGe heterostructures for quantum computing. IKZ is also a part of FAIRmat, a project under the National Data Infrastructure Initiative of the German Research Foundation, which supports the data infrastructure for experimental and computational materials science.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop first-principles-based multiscale modeling of crystal growth.
  • Foster strong collaborations with experimental scientists to promote interdisciplinary research.
  • Establish partnerships with computational centers for handling computationally intensive tasks.
  • Develop an internationally recognized research program leveraging IKZ's experimental expertise.
  • Secure third-party funding.
  • Supervise PhD students.

We maintain close collaborations in ab-initio theory with the solid-state theory groups at Humboldt University and Fritz-Haber Institute and work closely with leading semiconductor industries.

Requirements:

  • PhD in physics, crystallography, materials science, or a related discipline with a strong background in computational materials science
  • Proven expertise in computational materials science, density functional theory, machine learning, etc.
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and students.
  • Excellent knowledge of fundamental and solid-state physics.
  • Experience in securing third-party funding.

The position is available from July 1, 2024, for a duration of 2 years. Payment is according to TVöD (Collective agreement for the public sector) including the usual social benefits (30 vacation days in a 5-day week, flexible working hours). The IKZ is an equal opportunity employer and actively supports reconciliation of work and family life. There is equality for applicants of all genders. Qualified women are especially encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to disabled candidates.
