ARL – Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association, Hannover

The ARL – Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz-Association is looking for

a doctoral researcher (m/w/d) in the joint research project URBAN CLIMATE FUTURE LAB (UCFL)

TV-L 13, full-time position, 3 years; fixed-term, beginning October 1st, 2024.

The “Urban Climate Future Lab (UCFL)” is a pioneering research initiative of the Technische Universität Braunschweig in cooperation with the Leibniz University Hannover, Leuphana University Lüneburg, the Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association (ARL) and the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS). It is funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony (MWK).

The aim of UCFL is to gain a deep understanding of the complex interplay between urbanization, climate impact and mitigation, with a particular focus on Lower Saxony and its extrapolation to wider contexts. UCFL promotes a close interdisciplinary collaboration between architects, urban planners, landscape architects, engineers, climate scientists, and governance experts who work on achieving a transformation towards more resilient as well as low-carbon urban spaces: The planned research aims to first understand how different settlement types contribute to climate change, and how they are affected by it. Second, partnering with realworld actors, cities, municipalities, NGOs and industry, the research will focus on transformation knowledge: How can the Lower Saxony urban system and its constituting elements be transformed to reduce climate effects and increase its overall resilience and sustainability with application to wider contexts?

As partner in the „URBAN CLIMATE FUTURE LAB“ the ARL is working on the sub-project Governance (GOV) and is researching the barriers, opportunities and challenges of a climate-just transformation of urban systems in Lower Saxony. One research focus will be on power relations and justice in urban transformations as a starting point for the development of practiceoriented transformation strategies.

The main tasks are

  • Identification, systematization and analysis of governance approaches fostering resilient and climate-just spatial transformations, their current state of implementation and related challenges
  • Development of strategic approaches for transformative governance in the context of spatial and environmental justice in cooperation with the project team
  • Planning, conducting and evaluating qualitative interviews and standardised survey
  • Conceptualisation and realisation of workshops as part of the lab and in cooperation with the project team
  • Preparation of results on scientific conferences, in publications, project reports and transfer activities
  • Work on your own PhD project

Our Requirements

  • An above-average degree in the fields of sustainability, social, political or environmental sciences, geography, spatial and planning sciences or a similar relevant discipline
  • Profound knowledge of climate and urban policy and sustainability and transformation research
  • Very good Knowledge of empirical social research methods
  • Knowledge of power-critical approaches, e.g. gender and diversity studies, is advantageous
  • Interest in working in inter- and transdisciplinary teams
  • A very good command of both German and Englisch (written and spoken)

We offer

  • Opportunity for gaining ample experience in inter-and transdisciplinary research contributing to a more resilient future
  • Flexible working hours with the option of mobile working
  • Employment according to the TV-L with 30 days holiday per year
  • Teamwork and respectful cooperation

Our UCFL team is destined to become a diverse and multi-disciplinary group of researchers from the three universities and two renowned research organisations. As UCFL team we stand for a truly collaborative, multidisciplinary and integrative research to promote scientifically founded, co-creatively developed real-world solutions for the sustainable transformation of urban and rural areas amidst a climate crisis. To maximize our impact, we will partner with stakeholders beyond academia.
